"Crown of twists"

This is on Ally's and Li'l Bit's favorite hairstyle list for sure.  It doesn't take long, but it is a great style that can be very versatile. I simply twist (or braid) the hair part-way up the head, and secure with rubber bands. Then I take the remaining hair from those twists (or braids) and twist (or braid) it up and together from ear to ear. Then the back can be styled any way you want, but we like to leave it out. :) That way it looks kindof like a crown in the front leading into their beautiful manes. At least, it looks that way to me. :) Anyway, on to the pictures.

Style re-created:faux hawk on (short) hair

In case you aren't aware, UntrainedHairMom is hosting a kid's hairstyle re-creation contest, and I decided to put a spin on her faux hawk hairstyle .  I am trying my best to keep Li'l Bit's hair in twists since I have noticed some thinning in her hair....so this style was a great way to try out a new style, enter the contest, AND work on my twisting skills.  

I really like how it came out. The pictures aren't that great, because Li'l Bit was not in a picture taking mood. And she was eating an apple. Thus the chipmunk cheeks in the last picture. :)

Can her scalp really be THIS sensitive?! :( (HELP!?)

I was taking Li'l Bit's hair out of braids today. (They have only been in for 4 or 5 days, and I didnt THINK they were all that tight) and was faced with the HORRIBLE realization that my baby is getting a bald spot. I admit it, I am still learning about her type 4 curlees, and I have always thought that the tighter the curl, the more sensitive the hair is  to breakage and splitting. But Li'l Bit wears her hair out in between braid styles, and I have never found any bumps or redness on her scalp (and trust me, I look.) So regardless of contant moisturizing, very tender touches and as many protective hairstlyes as possible, there is was. At the crown of her head. Thinning hair. :( Now I am researching this, scouring the internet for natural products to put on her scalp, tips on what to do/what not to do to stop this from happening, and to help her hair grow back. I am pretty much devastated. I mean, as parents we do all we can to make our children as healthy and well rounded as possible. And I just know it is something I am doing that is causing my baby's hair loss. :(

So I decided that she needs another protective hairstyle, and I need to lay off of braids for awhile. So I did my first ever flat twists on this beautiful head. I have attempted them before, but they always frizz up and unravel before the day is up.  So I tried these 2 strand flat twists (not sure if that is what these are called?) I made them VERY loose, and they are frizzy, but her hai has frzzy tendencies anyway. I wanted to protect her sensitive hairline, so instead of pulling her hair back, I decided to try twisty bangs, kindof like what I saw here at Charlotte's Avenue. (Love that little baby's adorable face!) Anyway, here is how it came out.

In the last picture, you can see the bald spot on the top of her head :(

So please, if anyone has ANY ideas on products to use, hairstyles to try, or any other advice on how to hep this situation, I am all ears.

My failed , and revised, attempt at 3 strand twists on Li'l Bit's hair

I decided to be a li'l bit creative with Li'l Bit's hair. After cowashing, conditioning, and corn braiding the front half of her head, I did my best attempt at unbanded two strand twists...and failed. Then I tried unbanded three strand twists.....they came out a little bit better, but it was still nothing I would send my baby out in public with. So I randomly banded the back of her head, did the three strand twists, attached barrettes, laced some ribbon through her braids, and here it is!

I just realized that the pictures are not the best quality, we are inside and I do not have the best camera. I will try to take some more tomorrow when we are out and about.  We are going to see The Lion King in 3D!!!! I am super uber excited about this, The Lion King is one of my favorite movies of all time. Is anyone else planning on seeing this in theater? It is only going to be playing for 2 weeks, so hurry! :)

The Princess's 3 strand twists with product: Organic coconut & habiscus curl and style milk by Shea Moisture

Last week, our new Shea Moisture products were delivered and this is the first time I have gotten to use the Curl milk on The Princess's hair. This is not a review, I will do that later after I have used the product a few times on her hair. I just wanted to share her new 'do. :)

Because The Princess's hair is so thin and straight, most of her moisturizing has to be done during the washing process. So before we wash, I part her hair into sections and slather it in Olive Oil, put it in some loose braids and let it sit for a couple of hours. Then I wash it with David Babaii for WildAid shampoo (sulfate free) and condition it with Herbal Essense's Hello Hydration conditioner. After rinsing her hair, I applied hair milk by Shea Moisture and let it dry. Her hair is most manageable once dry, when it has lots of body and is a little bit thicker. Once it dried, I parted it into sections and applied Organic Lock and Twist Gel to each section as I banded and twisted . I wish her hair would stay twisted without bands and barettes, but it won't.  

I like the way it turned out, and more importantly, The Princess LOVES it! My plan is to have her sleep on her satin pillowcase nightly, and leave this style in now (Saturday) through Wednesday before school. I am hoping to have a really nice 3 strand twist out waiting for us on Wednesday morning. We will see what happens, and I will post pictures either way. :)
