I call it a breakfast smoothie that's most often when we make ours. It's packed with do many vitamins and minerals that no matter when you drink it, you will always feel good about it. It also tastes 'deliciouso', as my kids like to say. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwomZJxr8D7nnlEDaHMDQC67CCiWlO7PueZK0nkBX0FhbAN0biABrs-xJX-SxUZodPrbi8WE3_2JzugM36jQRVSRrvwTxP5xh9MZWKju62hi1zVAUcA2I1JLaSEBTKLlTgAIltLhMCLiWd/s640/blogger-image-338029473.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwomZJxr8D7nnlEDaHMDQC67CCiWlO7PueZK0nkBX0FhbAN0biABrs-xJX-SxUZodPrbi8WE3_2JzugM36jQRVSRrvwTxP5xh9MZWKju62hi1zVAUcA2I1JLaSEBTKLlTgAIltLhMCLiWd/s400/blogger-image-338029473.jpg" width="299" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
Here's the deal: I don't measure things. I am providing you with a recipe with approximate measurements, because I normally just throw a bunch of ingredients in the blender and blend away. The amazing thing is, there is no wrong way to make a smoothie. It's all about whatever tastes good to you and your family. </div>
<br />
Ingredients:<br />
1/2 cup 0%fat greet yogurt<br />
1 1/2 cups fresh spinach <br />
1/3 cup peanut butter<br />
1 large banana<br />
7 or 8 large strawberries, frozen<br />
Couple handfuls of blueberries (I'm talking Li'l Bit sized hands.)<br />
Few splashes of water, or 100% fruit juice. <br />
<br />
Don't be intimidated by the spinach...you won't really taste it. The secret is to blend the spinach on high with the yogurt and juice for several minutes until there are no spinach chunks left. I imagine chewing a spinach chunk would ruin the smoothie experience. Then add the rest of the ingredients, blend until combined and smooth, and enjoy! <br />

My babies left me recently to head down south for a family reunion. They were only gone for 4 days, and while I knew they were in good hands with my dad and sister, I was beside myself with worry. My family always jokes with me that my kids come with more instructions than a new swing set (at least I think they're joking), though I can't figure out what the big deal is. Make sure they wear sunscreen. Remind them to brush/floss. Don't let them near water unless someone is DILIGENTLY watching them. No soda. No candy. No rated R movies. They will try to convince you that they are allowed to watch 'Family Guy', but they are NOT. You know, typical mom stuff. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Obviously, one thing I do not want them to have to worry about is hair. So before travelling or overnights away from mommy, I like to make sure the girls' hair is styled and protected. Here is the style that Li'l Bit rocked for the weekend. These pictures were taken 5 days after her hair was styled, and she DID swim without a cap, and she DID sleep without her satin pillowcase, and that IS lint, or grass, or something else in her hair that I did not see until looking at the pictures. But its a cute style, so I thought I'd share anyway:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjbw6aSFop3nrigeZh5Tdgs10hVCFDk-IFFUp2vtw4Wdu-6dDvmn6mXvfvSEFQFVdIaT1UyncLRRGg8IKqtyQjdxoggpPRhrwpAKGPH0L4wm0XG04UBWzbwqqzh7bqxxyuMefqotkUsdlb/s1600/ally.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjbw6aSFop3nrigeZh5Tdgs10hVCFDk-IFFUp2vtw4Wdu-6dDvmn6mXvfvSEFQFVdIaT1UyncLRRGg8IKqtyQjdxoggpPRhrwpAKGPH0L4wm0XG04UBWzbwqqzh7bqxxyuMefqotkUsdlb/s400/ally.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Starting with freshly washed and conditioned hair, Li'l Bit wore plaited hair for a day to stretch it out. I have found that her hair is easier to braid when it has been stretched somewhat, and I always braid her hair when it is dry. Her hair tends to break when I braid it while it is wet. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I parted the hair from ear to ear, but the part was not directly on top of her head, it was back more toward her crown area. Then I began to braid her hair. I freestyled the braids on top, but the ones in the back were braided straight up toward the part. The loose hair (after the cornrowed parts) were braided. Then I started on the left of her head and cornrowed the loose braids toward the center. Then I went to the right side and also braided those to the center. I twisted and tucked and pinned it all under itself until I liked the way it looked. (Did that make sense? I dont know how else to explain it.) I used two bobby pins, and plopped those two cute little clips on top just because she wanted me to. :)</div>

See the hair at the bottom that is left out? I intentionally leave that hair out whenever I am braiding/styling her hair. It is not as long as the rest of her hair, so I am afraid of pulling it. In addition to that, it hurts her if that hair is tugged at all. Since I am more concerned with her comfort and the health of her hair than I am with how it looks, that section is always left out. :)</div>

Ally asked me to style her hair this way, and I thought it was too cute not to share. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8BeowyAxF0vL60-_EeO6qoiKmwSMJGZXYRJvop4rW-DDYjhvv00pYWGcx_MeUkS9uF330dDy_QgjDxxNSg_QBTGsCij9YIKeoSE5hVTeAV2wRJen3pazoW8gWfZn_ugjy1YeHjnYo32kM/s1600/251056_1989748459787_1125620945_32350365_515556_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8BeowyAxF0vL60-_EeO6qoiKmwSMJGZXYRJvop4rW-DDYjhvv00pYWGcx_MeUkS9uF330dDy_QgjDxxNSg_QBTGsCij9YIKeoSE5hVTeAV2wRJen3pazoW8gWfZn_ugjy1YeHjnYo32kM/s400/251056_1989748459787_1125620945_32350365_515556_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ally has been a travelling li'l lady recently; and after spending two weeks in Illinois with family, stopping home for a few days before travelling to North Carolina for a family reunion, her hair was in need of some TLC. For the most part, Ally maintains her hair well. She remembers (most of the time) to braid it at night, and moisturizes it daily. But as all of us curly haired girls know, that's not really enough. That's where mommy steps in. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I gave her hair a protein treatment with a homemade concoction I threw together. I used an egg, some Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and some honey. I didn't measure anything (except the egg; I used one), so there is no recipe. I thought I used too much honey, because her hair was super sticky while I was applying the guck, but when I rinsed it out her hair was instantly softer and healthier looking. So maybe it was ok. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I washed her hair using Nubian Heritage's African Black Soap. We have been using this for about 2 months, and we no longer use shampoo in my house. We all have healthier scalps because of it, and it does not dry our hair like shampoos do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After cleansing, I did an ACV (apple cider vinegar) rinse, and conditioned with a Tresemme conditioner. I applied Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie throughout her hair, and parted a section of it off for braids. The part is not down the middle of her head, it is more toward the right side because she wanted it to fall in her face somewhat. It is for this reason that I probably would modify this style if I were doing it on the little girls' hair, I like to try and keep their hair out of their faces. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-6CzPbkjX6EFBzkAWGp6MHNiyck5j-St5CpaZ6DisfvUooAOr1IRYWHpwUtcMuMGlgPC4kZHHjVfZIh_PWSHOMk1MuYr8WvqjlKEVUEyuG0nyy48h3kYZ2_f1HUcciJMN7sdItfE2wYIB/s1600/247292_1989753179905_1125620945_32350369_3408989_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-6CzPbkjX6EFBzkAWGp6MHNiyck5j-St5CpaZ6DisfvUooAOr1IRYWHpwUtcMuMGlgPC4kZHHjVfZIh_PWSHOMk1MuYr8WvqjlKEVUEyuG0nyy48h3kYZ2_f1HUcciJMN7sdItfE2wYIB/s400/247292_1989753179905_1125620945_32350369_3408989_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I used a little bit of Eco Styler Gel for the braids, but the only thing in the rest of her hair is the Curl Enhancing Smoothie. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I used a blow dryer with a diffuser on the medium heat setting to dry her hair about 90%. As you can see, the SM smoothie doesn't do much to define her curls, but it is great for adding moisture and shine. It also prevented her hair from frizzing up too much, and since we were going for the 'effortless' look anyway, we both loved how it came out.<br />

The plan is to turn this wash and go into a braid out by spritzing with water and braiding it at night. She does have swim lessons tomorrow, so we shall see how that works out. We will try and check back in tomorrow with an update. :)<br />

I'm not sure why I have not used Kinky Curly's Curling Custard (KCCC) on Li'l Bit's hair before; I have had amazing results on both mine and Ally's hair using it. I think because the product is a bit on the pricier side, I did not want to "waste" it on Li'l Bit's tiny coils because I thought there was no way this product could capture the 'wet' look on her hair.....boy was I wrong. <br />

Will you LOOK at that definition?! And can you believe that her hair is almost (I'd guess about 90%) dry in this picture?! Even better; the only thing we did to protect her hair at night was have her sleep on a satin pillowcase, and her hair stayed this defined for 3 days. I just had her shake her head, fluffed where fluffing was needed, and there was perfection. :)</div>

I will be trying this out again, as I plan on doing a comprehensive review of KCCC and it's effects on all of us curly girls in the Different Kinds of Curls household. When I do, I will have more pictures and information to share. But for now, I was excited..and I wanted to share. :)</div>

Li'l Bit, of course, was feeling too full of herself with her bangs (which she always loves) and beads (for which she chose the pattern). <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0-ryGLZ0z3VdCPUrTeJQNHo7jV3aE6q5NUXgqWkB9wYp6GkwU3xB6g4sTl_z5o4Tl7x901iGJWaX5UxK76rGoT7i41CRaeWpuU-BlapDfha1mg0nBwrvSztFuM2i0dWbqatbLjo-mGJZq/s1600/GEDC7441.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" rca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0-ryGLZ0z3VdCPUrTeJQNHo7jV3aE6q5NUXgqWkB9wYp6GkwU3xB6g4sTl_z5o4Tl7x901iGJWaX5UxK76rGoT7i41CRaeWpuU-BlapDfha1mg0nBwrvSztFuM2i0dWbqatbLjo-mGJZq/s400/GEDC7441.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The pattern of the beads was blue, blue, blue, star...or something similar. While I worked on the braids, Li'l Bit had the very important responsibility of placing the beads on the beader. <br />
<br />
Ok, so here is hot we did this:<br />
On freshly washed and properly moisturized hair, I made a "V" shaped part in the front of the head, the point of the "V" towards the crown of the head. Because Li'l Bit's hair is short (shoulder length when stretched), braiding the hair into this shape made the perfect length bangs:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="border: currentColor; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGEv4z_ioj6sp2NBpgiam6rWPfU-OXafl8bRNSEVMvpPjQqoktAzBDe3Gcj1A9kQs-1nSLTLTFkFr2pDzHelqmmCh91Q01eEbemmgZ5atxBXCKkXknbZl1-J3ZtymuluOxskplJKH7x7wg/s1600/GEDC7445.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" rca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGEv4z_ioj6sp2NBpgiam6rWPfU-OXafl8bRNSEVMvpPjQqoktAzBDe3Gcj1A9kQs-1nSLTLTFkFr2pDzHelqmmCh91Q01eEbemmgZ5atxBXCKkXknbZl1-J3ZtymuluOxskplJKH7x7wg/s400/GEDC7445.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I then made a part down the middle of my daughter's head, sort of extending from the point of the "V". I braided from the sides toward the center, but I made the braids in a sort of brick pattern. That is, the braids on the left and right sides of her head did not meet in the middle, they were on slightly different levels. Its hard to see in the pictures, but braiding this way makes the center look 'fuller' and makes it less difficult to see the parts. <br />
<br />
Just for fun, on every other braid, I added beads to the cornrows. To do this, I just cornrowed the hair until I was at the point where I wanted the bead to be. Then I stopped braiding, slid the bead on, and continued braiding where I left off. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Because I am afraid of damaging her ends, I always try not to leave beads in Li'l Bit's hair for more than 3 or 4 days at a time. Life happened, and these stayed in for 6 days. When I removed them, (just the ones on the ends) I co-washed her hair and left the braids in for another 4 days before removing the loose braids (not the cornrows) and she rocked a true fauxhawk, with free hair in the middle. It was gorgeous, total rock star status. :) Unfortunately, I did not get around to taking pictures of her hair after I removed the beads. But she loved the entire style, and so did I. </div>

I worried about it so much, in fact, that I didn't get her anything at all. Typical me. <br />
<br />
Soooo....we all changed out of our pajamas and headed to Target. The Princess had seen a <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/88946161360628240/" target="_blank">picture I pinned on Pinterest</a> of a great idea for an end of the year gift for teachers, and she suggested that we do something similar. So we did. <br />
<br />
The Princess remembered her teacher telling the class that she loved to play in the sand with her son. Lucky us, in the dollar section of Target, they had a decent sized sand bucket with a little shovel. :)<br />
Into the bucket we placed a rolled up beach towel, a mini sunscreen, and a magazine:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjHyjl7Jc2xuDDEKER64Ie5xgU7_-ifiKo1x_6Z1fOUnCB_gTBqzMGe_TpNvEd76-u0sHqKeqt-NYfyBETl_QwJTs4RzI3WvlWFG2UCVNExgzOPXJLUfxrfziR1D2DSSLOrpHgVxe8WqLv/s1600/GEDC7558.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" rca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjHyjl7Jc2xuDDEKER64Ie5xgU7_-ifiKo1x_6Z1fOUnCB_gTBqzMGe_TpNvEd76-u0sHqKeqt-NYfyBETl_QwJTs4RzI3WvlWFG2UCVNExgzOPXJLUfxrfziR1D2DSSLOrpHgVxe8WqLv/s320/GEDC7558.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6L8IpB_Q21EDYlQ-T9hM8lCalYQ4l8vbEi8UOMfyWYEj96cmn8B3PjYzeev9-7ePM3RmTS3JCK9odRtlzV4MveoD_4OPfvHyiC6hhb4XyvNrOC6YSJwcJq5IESBc0Q7zixhyyFD8f2Lem/s1600/GEDC7557.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" rca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6L8IpB_Q21EDYlQ-T9hM8lCalYQ4l8vbEi8UOMfyWYEj96cmn8B3PjYzeev9-7ePM3RmTS3JCK9odRtlzV4MveoD_4OPfvHyiC6hhb4XyvNrOC6YSJwcJq5IESBc0Q7zixhyyFD8f2Lem/s320/GEDC7557.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
This gift cost about $20 to put together, and her teacher loved it. She said it was the most unique, thoughtful gift she had received all year. That's exactly what we were going for. :)</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then The Princess added a note and drawing to the bucket. That, of course, was the best part. Here is a picture of the drawing:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3mXEa4hP64taU8nM81DUMRBgXjNaC5CjYV56UF8WeZvYT9W2iOmznMpWWc0pUsNoNtJhxt0BMbGQ4E29smB3pJ1GdT11UGC6V3_s4SaiG6mWf6_hm1Bq-EJLHtWbXC2o0_hBdIxbE8jAr/s1600/GEDC7561.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" rca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3mXEa4hP64taU8nM81DUMRBgXjNaC5CjYV56UF8WeZvYT9W2iOmznMpWWc0pUsNoNtJhxt0BMbGQ4E29smB3pJ1GdT11UGC6V3_s4SaiG6mWf6_hm1Bq-EJLHtWbXC2o0_hBdIxbE8jAr/s320/GEDC7561.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Believe it or not, the hardest part of putting this gift together was deciding on which magazine to include. Ally was adamant on People, or one of those gossip-y mags. The Princess wanted to include a pregnancy magazine (her teacher is NOT expecting), and Li'l Bit thought Nick Jr magazine would be a good fit. Personally, I LOVE Real Simple, so that got my vote. And since I was the one with the money, my vote won. ( I know, I'm sooo mean. lol!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Did you pass get presents for your kids' teachers? </div>

In case anyone is still reading, and for those of you who have emailed, inquired on Facebook, or just given us the random though...thank you. Everything is going well here; busy, but if I am busy then I am happy. Here are some life updates from my family since the last time I wrote:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Li'l Bit had her Kindergarten Orientation. I cried. In just 2 short months, I will bring my baby to school for the first time. This will be my last first day of school. :(</li>
<li>The Princess had her first dance recital. I cried. She takes tap and ballet, and the song she danced to for her ballet number was "In My Daughter's Eyes" by Martina McBride. Perfect song for crying. </li>
<li>Ally just left with my sister to vacay in Illinois with family for a week and a half. This is the longest she has been away from me. Guess what? I cried. She will return on the first, then leave again on the fifth for a family reunion in North Carolina. That girl is a traveling Diva. (I've been doing a lot of crying. All happy tears though.)</li>
<li>I've started 2 new jobs. Both part time, but together, full time. So between juggling 2 jobs, swim lessons, gymnastics, camp, Ally's volunteering with the Special Olympics and her clubs, we will be some busy folks this summer. That means lots of protective styles over this way. :)</li>
<li>I have started experimenting with making my own hair products. There are several reasons for this, and I will hopefully be doing a complete post on this soon. The main reasons, however, is that I have been increasingly aware of the chemicals I am exposing my family to, and I have come to the conclusion that nature provides us with most (if not all) of what we need. Soon I'll be sharing recipes, fails and successes, with you all. </li>
<li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">In an effort to eat healthier, my family has decided to go meatless on Mondays. I have, therefore, developed/stolen/found some great meatless meal ideas, and I would love to share some of those as well. :)</li>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
</div>
As busy as our summer is going to be, I anticipate it being less busy than the past couple of months. So I will be posting more. (I miss blogging so, and I really miss reading all of the blogs that I subscribe to...I just miss my whole Internet family.)<br />
<br />
Here are some sneak previews of some of the hair stories I will elaborate on soon, in case you missed these faces. Enjoy, and thanks for all of the inquiries. :)<br />
</ul>

We have been so busy, blogging has absolutely been taking a backseat to life. But we are still here, and we are still doing hair. :)<br />
<br />
I wanted to share with you all the hairstyle The Princess has been rockin' all week. Of course, I am me, so I didn't manage to take pictures of the original style until we were in transistioning mode but I hope you can get the idea anyway:<br />

These are flat rope twists into a ponytail with rope twists. This was my first attempt trying these on The Princess's hair, and we are definitely going to be doing a lot more of these. I like these twists because they held nearly as well as braids (and a whole lot better than regular flat twists) but I didn't feel like they were as harsh on The Princess's super fine, thin, hair. When I took these pictures, the twists had been in her hair for 4 days, and her sleeping cap had fallen off EVERY night. (I have got to find a better one. Any recommendations?) Her hair was slightly frizzy, but I've learned to live with a little bit of frizz. On day 4, I untwisted the ponytails, and she rocked her twist out ponies for a day:</div>

Now, if you have not yet attempted a rope twist, or a flat rope twist; I encourage you to do so. I have done them on all 3 of my girls, and it is a great protective style that holds us nicely and doesn't stress the hair too much. I could try to explain how to do them, but I think it would just be easier to direct you to the video that I learned from. Rory over at <a href="http://www.chocolatehairvanillacare.com/" target="_blank">Chocolate Hair, Vanilla Care</a> is the queen of rope twists, and she makes it so easy to follow along and learn. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyJ2wqPKsRI&feature=autoplay&list=ULN4sVWOtFDCw&playnext=1" target="_blank">Check out this video to see how its done.</a></div>

I'm starting to feel kindof guilty, like I need to be a little more creative and get back to creating my own styles again. The last style I did on Ally, and Li'l Bit, were both from Pinterest. And the now The Princess is wearing a copycat style as well. But I had been in a styling rut for awhile, so at least some hair is getting done, right!? <br />

I like this because it is versatile; you can finish the middle in a variety of ways. (As a matter of fact, I am going to try the same style on Li'l Bit, and hers will be finished quite differently.) I promised The Princess that toward the end of the week, I would take out the roll and she could rock her fauxhawk wild and free, 'rock star style', as she put it. I like that the braids are small, so it should last a significant amount of time. I like that it didn't take long to finish, maybe about an hour? I like that she loves it. :) </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy Sunday, everyone! This is a hairstyle that Li'l Bit rocked over Easter break, and I am just getting around to posting it. (Slacker) I got the idea for this style from a picture I saw on Pinterest (I LOVE Pinterest, must give credit where credit is due.) </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This style began as chunky braids that had been in for about a week. When I removed the braids, I did not comb or detangle her hair; I've found that twists hold better in her hair when there is some texture to it. For products, I used Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie and a distilled water mixture with olive oil and coconut oil. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After about 4-5 days in this style, I removed the twists. The braids still looked good, so I left them in. I wanted to get some pictures of this transformed style, but the child was on the move:</div>

I wanted to share the hairstyle The Princess is wearing to school today. I like this because it is super easy, it hides her ends, requires little maintenance, and should last 3-4 days. (In her thin, wavy hair, that is pretty good!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD_H0gEN5zLHj13tv6qLM37K2CS5T3_pl4swgMcNbBkTZoQiDe4rrsr2Hmxi74cYXEA9OsDoiQXdSsB_8RQN0mcCxsSWDqcNi5Wz69a7P8vr-Lu4-TC2bnl2hbdq8u0KBWLkgt-mRVvsUz/s1600/GEDC7247.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD_H0gEN5zLHj13tv6qLM37K2CS5T3_pl4swgMcNbBkTZoQiDe4rrsr2Hmxi74cYXEA9OsDoiQXdSsB_8RQN0mcCxsSWDqcNi5Wz69a7P8vr-Lu4-TC2bnl2hbdq8u0KBWLkgt-mRVvsUz/s400/GEDC7247.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
To achieve this style, I started with clean, moisturized hair. Yesterday was 'hair day' in my house, though I wish I had've planned better. No way should we have been stuck in the house doing hair on a sunny, 80 degree day. But the kids were on break last week, and unfortunately, we sort of neglected hair last week, so they were all in need of hot oil treatments and detangling and LOTS of moisturizing. But I digress....<br />
<br />
I gave The Princess a hot oil treatment. I used roughly half and half coconut oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil and heated them together in the microwave until warm. Then I poured the oils into one of those applicators that you use for hair color. I find it much easier, and neater, to apply oil treatments this way. Once the oil was in her hair, I plastic bagged her hair and put a warm towel on top. She stayed like this for about 30 minutes, (well, that was the plan. But we got sidetracked with other heads of hair and baking banana nut muffins. So it ended up being more like 2 hours...but who's counting?) Then we washed her hair with Head and Shoulders 2 in 1, and conditioned with Herbal Essense's Hello Hydration conditioner. I used Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie for moisture, and put a few loose braids in her hair for bed. <br />
<br />
This morning, I parted her hair into 3 uneven parts, and put an ouchless elastic band on each part:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicdVYfV1ryL7gtiXEvVOKV6fDA028SLAOM8Papam9WgpYU8N9qhsCcbdApZC9zkOPWtuHy9FauvrSLuNX4ivlsgznk6dHFFrp09wgvdFi3AqIuQrOgfS9eQYEiRhefvxgTjN7z4_bxF8Ni/s1600/GEDC7237.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicdVYfV1ryL7gtiXEvVOKV6fDA028SLAOM8Papam9WgpYU8N9qhsCcbdApZC9zkOPWtuHy9FauvrSLuNX4ivlsgznk6dHFFrp09wgvdFi3AqIuQrOgfS9eQYEiRhefvxgTjN7z4_bxF8Ni/s400/GEDC7237.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">yep...couldn't find a third pink band...but they will be hidden anyway.<br />
<br />
<div align="left">
</div>

</tbody></table>
Then I braided each part:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiustn8DPCVQKN80yDNl0kvrSP2agSF1megcVS00FlHqOqKTYI19wCqSOYgomvBtyJpNR9i1yA646YnvTvLLOKRZjX-UcEKHAMqiz3bOHNM139hnwJVX7hcSbHDUjAdTnqmF7O4L8SE1xl2/s1600/GEDC7241.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiustn8DPCVQKN80yDNl0kvrSP2agSF1megcVS00FlHqOqKTYI19wCqSOYgomvBtyJpNR9i1yA646YnvTvLLOKRZjX-UcEKHAMqiz3bOHNM139hnwJVX7hcSbHDUjAdTnqmF7O4L8SE1xl2/s400/GEDC7241.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div align="left">
Then wrapped each braid around itself and tucked the ends in. If you were going to do this style, you may or may not need an additional band to hold that in place, depending on the length and texture of your child's hair. The Princess did need additional hold:</div>
<div align="left">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTbUdLp4mdij2kISEKXBBxD9NEsfPPUUjMwSTYtT1u-TZRqahvd9_wl4cuepfYNQLqKpt56MsiBT3Ja0oumg0PyLYYX1pt0P8yK59lwgqPqvyPb_ak5TZN8V8kw1XMsO9-aebTkjHuiH1J/s1600/GEDC7242.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTbUdLp4mdij2kISEKXBBxD9NEsfPPUUjMwSTYtT1u-TZRqahvd9_wl4cuepfYNQLqKpt56MsiBT3Ja0oumg0PyLYYX1pt0P8yK59lwgqPqvyPb_ak5TZN8V8kw1XMsO9-aebTkjHuiH1J/s400/GEDC7242.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, of course, we had to fancy it up. The Princess chose a Bowsnappers flower that we recently won in a Facebook giveaway, and she chose some of the interchangeable bows to go underneath it:</div>

Once or twice a week, I will give it a good detangling/moisturizing; other than that, its been all her. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEcqHRl_dSZirOrTcogDdWPDFiunr2AtKgO-woWdXWlsb4xSqk-yarPHHolw726spb52S37Ww8yzu_iY-1DE70gIIrAhxLFuWvwa953IC-a_4Z6qgClYOIp0lmQUYPsMZltOp2FCe8QKIJ/s1600/ally.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEcqHRl_dSZirOrTcogDdWPDFiunr2AtKgO-woWdXWlsb4xSqk-yarPHHolw726spb52S37Ww8yzu_iY-1DE70gIIrAhxLFuWvwa953IC-a_4Z6qgClYOIp0lmQUYPsMZltOp2FCe8QKIJ/s400/ally.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Wash and go, with clips to take the hair off her face. Classic style, but not so great for everyday wear. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, that means a lot of braid outs, wash and gos and ponytails, because that is really all Ally knows how to do with her hair. I am constantly offering to style her hair, but she always adamantly declines, stating that she no longer wants 'braided styles' or 'elaborate designs'. I understand where these changes are coming from; most of Ally's friends at school wear their hair down most of the time, and while she wants to be 'different', she doesn't want to stand out TOO much. <br />
<br />
While I am proud that she is independent enough to know what she wants, and while she has been doing a great job caring for her own hair, I think the occasional protective hairstyle is necessary to give her hair a styling break and help is retain some moisture long term. So I have been scouring the Internet for inspiration; styles that are both simple and mature-ish (to satisfy Ally) and at least semi protective (to satisfy me.) This has proven to be a not so easy task; most styles I present to her and met with a grunt and the rolling of eyes. <br />
<br />
Then I found this gorgeous hairstyle on Pinterest:<br />
<br />
<div style="line-height: 0px; padding-bottom: 2px;">
<a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/88946161360694788/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://media-cache0.pinterest.com/upload/45106433737974126_e6ROIRfn_c.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
And when I watched the tutorial, it mentioned that this style was worn in The Hunger Games, I knew I had a shot at it being approved. Ally read all of the books before there was even talk of a movie, and the <strike>obsession </strike> fad has become big enough in my house that it may arguably be as <strike>worshipped</strike> liked as Twilight.(Gasp!) Yep, its THAT serious. Anywho, the style was approved (yay!) and here is our rendition of it:<br />

She loved the way it looked, and I loved the fact that it kept her hands out of her hair for 4 days. If you are interested in doing this, its just two french braids with the ends tucked in and over each other and secured with bobby pins. Confused? We had lots of errands to run yesterday, so to make it more fun for Li'l Bit, I gave her an old camera to carry around for the day. This is what was on the memory card at the end of the day......</div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
If you have been reading my blog for any amount of time, you probably know how much I love twists, and how much I would love to see them in Li'l Bit's hair. Unfortunately, the completely different hair types on her head simply don't allow for twists that hold, gracefully, without the help of barrettes or something similar on the ends. I think I posted this at some point in the past, but here is an example of the two very different types of hair on Li'l Bit's head:</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/424928_263930487011014_194640550606675_670885_1033566064_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" aria-busy="true" aria-describedby="fbPhotosSnowliftCaption" border="0" class="spotlight" height="212" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/424928_263930487011014_194640550606675_670885_1033566064_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
The tighter curls in the middle hold twists very well; the looser curls do not. Slowly but surely, the tighter curls in the middle are spreading throughout her head, and the looser curls are becoming fewer and fewer. Eventually, I think I may be able to do a full head of twists that will serve as a nice protective style and stay nice and crisp looking for longer than a few hours. Until then, this is my solution:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">

There it is. Two strand flat twists in the front, held together by snaps. I like the idea of these more so than barrettes because they are smaller and lighter in weight, so I think they cause less damage on her ends. The rest of the hair is in rope twists. The middle part of her head looked great without the snaps. What you cant see in the picture is that loose curls at the bottom of her hair unravelled and looked really stringy. Still haven't come up with a solution for that yet....This style lasted about a week in Li'l Bit's hair. :)</div>

Best part about twists? The twist out, of course!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unfortunately, I didn't think of taking the picture until early evening time; and my Li'l Bit is just SO rough on her hair. But I promise you, it was adorable earlier in the day when I first took the twists out and fluffed them! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To style her hair for the twists, I first co washed her hair with Herbal Essence's Hello Hydration. I used a small amount of Olive oil and Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie for moisture, and Eco Styler Gel (our first time using it...love!!) for hold. </div>

Ally has been caring for her own hair (post coming soon), The Princess has been rocking pigtails and simple braided styles. Li'l Bit has really been sticking with afro puffs (which I love). and an all out afro...surprisingly, her favorite style as of late. As a matter of fact, this is what happened last week when she tried to 'make her own afro':<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" aria-busy="true" aria-describedby="fbPhotosSnowliftCaption" class="spotlight" height="400" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/423667_292696470801082_194640550606675_736094_1241877194_n.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="300" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yep, that comb is stuck in her head. I mean, wrapped around and twisted and all up IN there. :(</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I did manage to get that comb out of there without too much damage, and without cutting it at all, but can you believe her hair was in twists before this happened? She woke up, took her hair cap off, and combed out her twists with that very small comb that had no business being used in her hair. So, after that, I made a deal with her: she could rock a 'fro every day if she wanted, but mommy would be the one to comb it out, and we would twist it every night and take it down every day. This satisfied her. :)<br />
<br />
This week, she came to me with a bag of beads and the rat tail comb. Subtle, this child is not. But you have to love a girl who knows what she wants. So after co washing her hair with Herbal Essence's Hello Hydration conditioner (we co wash, rinse out completely, then apply more conditioner, and rinse out a little more than half of it. Then I blast her hair with a shot of cold-ish water to seal in the moisture.), here is the style I came out with:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpldlKlVmKDTerc6DvX5QdjraYT8x9XeZOFivIfWDNGM6pgW2H7woIUZOfKDVi0oEAJs1PImuMUdCvJrQTNsLVhLoV45urtbSGi8zWKtchbOfHXck29F0ugjMLpdItUFGmJs_aAVHfV3bo/s1600/GEDC7039.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img aea="true" border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpldlKlVmKDTerc6DvX5QdjraYT8x9XeZOFivIfWDNGM6pgW2H7woIUZOfKDVi0oEAJs1PImuMUdCvJrQTNsLVhLoV45urtbSGi8zWKtchbOfHXck29F0ugjMLpdItUFGmJs_aAVHfV3bo/s400/GEDC7039.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvh0F2ViBnZCGr3yfulXQcLJWglk68EuRCqMOza4-coOhpqN-cBnU7hW3PD2KmFK2vXeEr5XwsbDKWt4RQgC4ykEvd28kcyYYr7MBKY7bukh5QD5K8r_xB3OccPkYpn3C8dZuo7sueEq8m/s1600/GEDC7050.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img aea="true" border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvh0F2ViBnZCGr3yfulXQcLJWglk68EuRCqMOza4-coOhpqN-cBnU7hW3PD2KmFK2vXeEr5XwsbDKWt4RQgC4ykEvd28kcyYYr7MBKY7bukh5QD5K8r_xB3OccPkYpn3C8dZuo7sueEq8m/s400/GEDC7050.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Guess who those fingers belong to? lol.<br />
<br />
<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Unfortunately, I was not able to get clear pictures of the back, (she barely stood still for these 3) but there are just 2 rows of braids going straight down her head. I used Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie for moisture and Kinky Curly's Curling Custard for hold. I am hoping to keep these in for 2 weeks, probably removing the beads after 4 or 5 days. Unfortunately, she has already lost quite a few beads; I am so afraid of damaging her ends I only wrap the rubber bands around 5 or 6 times. With braids this small, that's apparently not enough. And those snappy things just do not stay in her hair at all. Does anyone else have that problem?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am working in reverse; tomorrow I will post the twisted style she wore 2 weeks ago. Happy St Patrick's day everyone!!</div><div class="blogger-post-footer"><div id="fb-root"></div>

Today is the second day of a wash and go for me, and I wanted to do a quick post showing the difference between the first and second day of wash and go's on my hair. I have said in the past that I prefer second day wash and go, so I figured I'd show you the difference:<br />
<br />

I'm not up for a giveaway, so that's out. I decided, while I was catching up on some blog reading, to show my appreciation to some of the blogs that I frequent, and to introduce some of my favorite blogs to you all. So here goes: Thank you all, for making me smile, keeping me entertained, challenging me, informing me, inspiring me. Thank you for encouraging me (although some of you probably don't know I exist) and making me realize that my life is not as strange as I like to think sometimes. <br />
<br />

<a href="http://girlyandcurly.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Girly and Curly</a>........Star of the blog Dez and my Ally are about the same age, so I appreciate the many styles and hair care tips for tweens that I gain from this site. There is a feature that blog owner Michelle created called "stunning strangers'....I love it, and I encourage you all to check it out!<br />
<a href="http://beadsbraidsbeyond.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Beads, Braids and Beyond</a>.....Another great blog for inspiration....and little "A"'s hair is just gorgeous!<br />
<a href="http://tweenyhair.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Tweeny Hair</a>....Rae and Syd are dealing with a LOT of hair over there, and it always looks amazing. This blog has been on my list of faves since I first heard of blogs, and I still can't figure out how to get my twists to come out anything like theirs. I will not quit, though! <br />
<br />
<u><span style="color: blue;"><strong>Bloggers I would love to meet:</strong></span></u><br />

Dominique-Alexis of <a href="http://natural-hair-care-info.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Natural-Hair-Care-Info</a>....I forget that she is still in high school sometimes, she is so mature. I love her love for family, and that Bunny is just too darn cute!<br />

<a href="http://www.peopleiwanttopunchinthethroat.com/" target="_blank">People I Want to Punch in The Throat</a>...I was declaring "That person needs a punch in the throat" long before I found this blog. We were made for each other. <br />
<br />
I have, undoubtedly, left out a lot of people/blogs. But it is really late (for me, at least) and I am really tired. If you are not here, it does not mean I do not love you. It just means this is a short list (sort of?) and I am going to bed. Thanks for reading, and thanks for inspiring me!<br />
<br />
I also want to thank everyone who reads my little blog. I appreciate the fact that you find me interesting enough to take the time to read what I have to say. That means a lot to me. :)<br />

I have been debating whether or not to share with you all the very personal reasons for my absence; and after much soul searching, I have decided that if there is even one person out there that can learn from or benefit from my struggles, then I should post about them. <br />
<br />
Easier said than done. <br />
<br />
I am an extremely private person, and sharing my problems with others is not something I have ever been very good at. In fact, it just took me half an hour to write that first paragraph. In fact, a lot of my family/friends do not even know what I am about to tell you all, so please bear with me.....<br />
<br />
(Deep breath) I have two health conditions, both of which can make living very difficult when they flare up. One is Lupus, which I'm sure many of you have heard of, and the other is Familial Mediterranean Fever, which, if you are anything like I was at the time of my diagnosis, you probably have not. My rheumatologist tells me that to have both of those diseases is almost unheard of, and one is more likely to win the Powerball than they are to have them both; I have not won the Powerball. <br />
<br />
Without getting into too many gory details (I will provide links if you would like more information), I can tell you that both Lupus and FMF are both diseases that deal with inflammation. They both leave me weak and sore. They both cause arthritis. They both leave my body riddled with rashes, and my hair brittle and dry. The stress of one flareup usually causes the other to flare, so I never know where one symptom starts and the other ends, but I do know that there are days when I literally cannot get out of bed, <br />
<br />
So why keep it all a secret? I think I am so secretive about my conditions, in part, because I am afraid of sympathy. When others sympathize with your situation, it is so much easier to feel bad for yourself. I have no time to feel bad for myself. I have school, kids, a husband, house, and dog to take care of. Also, I just don't like complaining. <br />
<br />
So why share now? Well, I have been researching, and implementing lifestyle changes that may help ease the symptoms of these two diseases without the use of medications. Recently, Ally has been showing signs of having FMF, and we are beginning genetic testing to (hopefully) rule it out. (Unfortunately, each of my children has a 50 percent chance of having the defective chromosome that causes FMF, so diagnosis is not unlikely.) A lot of my researching has led me to take a second look at the foods we eat, and how they are prepared. Since this blog serves as a diary of sorts for me, I will be posting some new recipes and healthy ideas on here from time to time. I hope you all don't get too bored with it all and leave me. :) <br />
<br />
My first new healthy change that I have made includes eating soup at least once a week for dinner. I have read up on the benefits of eating healthy soup, and just to share a few of the benefits:<br />
<ol>
<li>People that eat soup eat less, so it aids in weight loss.</li>
<li>Soup can be loaded with lots of healthy vegetables, and most veggies have very high anti inflammatory factors. I will talk more about that in another post. </li>
<li>Soup is inexpensive to make, and a lot of the time, you can just use what you have on hand to make it. </li>
</ol>
So, since this post is already too long by my standards, I will share the recipe for the soup we ate last night. It was a hit, is easy to make, and yielded lots of leftovers. (Which I love.)<br />

<br />
<strong>1 (28 oz) can of crushes tomatoes</strong><br />
<strong>1 (28 oz) can of diced tomatoes with basil and oregano</strong><br />
<strong>1 (14.5 oz can of low sodium chicken broth</strong><br />
<strong>12 fresh basil leaves, minced</strong><strong>1/2 packet of Goya sazon (or other seasoning of your choice)</strong><br />
<strong>1 cup of heavy cream</strong><br />
<strong>4 Tbs butter or margarine</strong><br />
<strong><strong>black pepper, to taste. </strong></strong><strong>Combine tomatoes and chicken broth, bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add basil and sugar, stir. Add remaining ingredients, mix thoroughly and cook until butter is melted. </strong><br />
<br />
I served this with grilled ham and cheese sandwhiches, and called it a day. Ally loved it so much, she requested it for lunch today. The only complaint I have about this recipe, is that the sodium content is high, but whenever you use canned foods, that is the result. <br />
<br />

Recently, Ally has decided that she is too old for most our 'fun' lunches, like the <a href="http://differentkindsofcurls.blogspot.com/2011/12/lunchbox-tuesdays-peanut-butter-and.html" target="_blank">peanut butter and jelly sushi rolls</a> and the <a href="http://differentkindsofcurls.blogspot.com/2011/11/lunchbox-tuesdays.html" target="_blank">banana hot dog</a>. (My baby is growing up! *tears*) She was tiring of sandwiches every day and wanted salads, but there is no refrigeration , so the lettuce always ended up wilted and sweaty (gross). <br />
<br />
While in Target 2 weeks ago, we happened upon the tupperware aisle, where we found these cool containers that keep the salad cold and fresh all day. Ally loved it so much that she has been requesting salad 3-4 times a week since she got it. Kids asking for fruits and veggies!? Score! <br />
<br />
For lunch today, she used her cool new salad container filled with romaine and iceburg lettuce (for crunch), broccolli, and shredded carrots. I tossed it with leftover chicken from last night's roasted chicken dinner. Teamed up with a yogurt, a couple of cookies, and a water bottle, and you've got a complete meal full of yumminess! <br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
I've been meaning to post this for awhile, I know some of you have been looking for ideas for Valentine's Day hairstyles, so I wanted to share the style The Princess has been rocking this week. This is a protective hairstyle, so there are no beads, barrettes, etc; and all of the ends are protected. I did not take pictures as I went, so I will just try to explain this the best way I can:</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2ILsQtL-_cCnWYUeFFGD1Dhfylm14pfJyu_7a-6NSuLqaib7Ja2PAR3j8HOzHKgg6OxEn-Jsh7zR-0rAlQEqvbG4zFvaekEnuZwg2ipbHNPaVuk-2oHkjgpLNmaDi05QT11T4gpqBq_47/s1600/heart1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2ILsQtL-_cCnWYUeFFGD1Dhfylm14pfJyu_7a-6NSuLqaib7Ja2PAR3j8HOzHKgg6OxEn-Jsh7zR-0rAlQEqvbG4zFvaekEnuZwg2ipbHNPaVuk-2oHkjgpLNmaDi05QT11T4gpqBq_47/s400/heart1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started with clean, well moisturized hair; I believe I used Shea Moisture's Curl and Style Milk as a leave in. This was actually an 'accidental' Valentines Day style, I started off trying to give her a unique protective style by creating the slanted cornrow style all the way down her head; then I got to the back and realized that I could easily make this look like a heart....I mentioned the idea to The Princess and she loved it, so I went for it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">
I created slanted parts, braiding each section all the way down. Then I braided the braids together along the sides of her head: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirJSstuZ7D7SJKEfkAHPi0LawQA_nP2dK5uetiFxabPWJCh3Xiiif60rxQdMsCzesv2gaik8yhltPzeEnO_LTYysJiMO0GdqgSKeX_Eduu-7-rs_PUDnOGuKlqcolyb8BPC-hvzMtAvV5b/s1600/heart2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirJSstuZ7D7SJKEfkAHPi0LawQA_nP2dK5uetiFxabPWJCh3Xiiif60rxQdMsCzesv2gaik8yhltPzeEnO_LTYysJiMO0GdqgSKeX_Eduu-7-rs_PUDnOGuKlqcolyb8BPC-hvzMtAvV5b/s400/heart2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is definitely room for variation here; you can keep the ends free and and add beads, barrettes, snaps, or whatever pretties you like. :) We just trimmed The Princess's ends, and I wanted to protect them, so we kept this style protective. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I got to the back of her head, I just parted the final two braids on more of a slant, to create the 'heart' look. Then I created a little mini braided bun to hide those ends as well, securing the bun with an ouchless ponyholder. I imagine that this would look great with a bantu knot, or a pontytail and beads, if you wanted to use pretties to dress it up some. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The braids along side of her head were connected in the back, where i kindof twisted them up and hid the ends in the braids underneath, if that makes sense. Not really, right? Well here is another look at it, maybe you can sort of look and see what I am talking about:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7ZA_0LezkBPxPrfCY7JsZ4joaefBl2sI3-uhJR5ev6fophLBsHwW15ebfdsabdVnmirBbUWGXk_qzkFAbPavdGOevDh44PHmwgAfXpqVHgzCSWTYMWgOlB3PGKLoqHkpFFccfRNTwEe5X/s1600/heart3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7ZA_0LezkBPxPrfCY7JsZ4joaefBl2sI3-uhJR5ev6fophLBsHwW15ebfdsabdVnmirBbUWGXk_qzkFAbPavdGOevDh44PHmwgAfXpqVHgzCSWTYMWgOlB3PGKLoqHkpFFccfRNTwEe5X/s400/heart3.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And that's it! This style took us about 20 minutes, and it will last all week, I just refresh the bun in the back every other day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
