Book Review: "I Like Myself!" by Karen Beaumont, Illustrated by David Catrow

I Like Myself
Written by Karen Beaumont
Illustrated by David Catrow
Interest level: K-Grade 2

Description (from Scholastic website):

A young girl describes her looks and personality in an amusing way. She is happy with who she is because there is no one else she would rather be. This rhyming book uses colorful illustrations to support the points the young girl is trying to make.

Our review:

I could think of no better book to write our first book review on. When I purchased this book from Scholastic.com I had actually intended for it to be a stocking stuffer, but when I found myself sitting across the kitchen table from 3 little heads that looked surprisingly similar to the braided locks of the narrator on the front cover, I just had to whip it out weeks early and indulge in some confidence boosting, entertaining, fun reading.

My girls found this book to be engaging, and it was a fairly easy read for my first grade daughter. There were a few words that she needed help sounding out, but I like books that challenge them a little bit. My niece, who is in Kindergarten, was able to read some of the pages with assistance as well.

"I Like Myself" is narrated by a small girl who embraces her individuality and describes to her readers ALL of the wonderful things about herself, physical and otherwise.

"I like me on the inside, too, for all I think and say and do."

We give this book 5 out of 5 stars. The pictures made my girls laugh, the story engaged them, and the message was one that every little girl needs to hear: Everything about you is wonderful, and worthy of liking.

  1. Very cute. I like all the girls gathered around the book--nothing better than watching a big girl read to others!

  3. aren't parents funny sometimes. I was taken to the hairdressers to perm it to "look nice" because my straight hair was unacceptable.

    she looks adorably happy.
